Ideal D50 for NCM811 Cathode Material

D50 target differs significantly between polycrystalline (secondary‑sphere) and single‑crystal NCM811, and must be evaluated together with D10, D99(Dmax), span, tap density and specific surface area (SSA).

1. Polycrystalline NCM811 (conventional secondary‑sphere, mainstream for EV)

  • Ideal industrial D50: 8.0 – 11.0 μm; typical commercial target ≈10 μm
  • Full PSD matching window:
    • D10: 3.0‑5.0 μm
    • D90: 14‑18 μm
    • D99 (Dmax): ≤30‑35 μm (strict killer‑particle control)
    • Span = (D90‑D10)/D50: 1.1‑1.4 (narrow span preferred)
    • Tap density: ≥2.3 g/cm³; SSA: 0.4‑0.7 m²/g

Trade‑offs for polycrystalline NCM811

  1. D50 > 12 μm: Higher tap density, but longer Li‑ion diffusion path; poor rate performance; high risk of oversized killer particles piercing separator.
  2. D50 < 7 μm: Faster Li‑ion kinetics, higher specific surface area; more residual lithium, severe moisture sensitivity, tap density drops, worse electrode processability for high‑nickel NCM811.

For polycrystalline NCM811, do not pursue too‑small D50. Excess fine fractions aggravate surface side‑reactions and cycle degradation.

2. Single‑crystal NCM811 (no secondary spherical agglomerates)

  • Ideal industrial D50: 3.0‑5.0 μm
  • PSD reference: D99 ≤12‑15 μm, narrow span.
  • Single‑crystal particles are monolithic primary grains; smaller D50 improves rate capability, while larger D50 elevates tap density.

3. Lab‑scale / R‑&D reference

Lab‑synthesized NCM811 may use D50 = 6‑8 μm for electrochemical evaluation, but this is not suitable for mass production due to low tap density and high surface alkali content.

4. Key practical guidelines for production

  1. D50 cannot be viewed in isolation. Even with correct D50, broad PSD with abundant ultra‑fines or high D99 will ruin cell performance and safety.
  2. For polycrystalline NCM811: precursor D50 largely determines final powder D50; grinding‑classification only fine‑tunes PSD and cuts Dmax, cannot drastically shift median size.
  3. High‑nickel NCM811 avoids over‑milling to shrink D50; over‑grinding generates large fines, raises residual lithium and hygroscopicity.

Quick summary table

NCM811 type Ideal D50 (μm) Main application
Polycrystalline (secondary sphere) 8.0‑11.0 (target ~10 μm) EV, power lithium‑ion batteries
Single‑crystal 3.0‑5.0 μm High‑voltage, long‑cycle power batteries
