How to Produce Nano-NCM Powder

Nano-NCM generally refers to NCM particles with primary particle size below 100 nm. Two major technical routes exist: top-down mechanical milling (break down existing micron NCM) and bottom-up chemical synthesis (directly grow nano-crystals), based on JACAN powder processing knowledge from ncm-mill.com. Dry jet milling alone cannot make true discrete nano NCM; it can only reach submicron range, which is a key distinction.

1. Top-down route: Wet bead milling (most practical for nano NCM)

This is the preferred top-down method to produce real nano NCM for lab and pilot scale. Dry jet milling hits its physical limit around 0.4 μm and suffers severe re-agglomeration below that threshold, so wet bead milling is selected.

  1. Prepare slurry: Disperse commercial calcined NCM powder in solvent (water or organic solvent), add suitable dispersant to suppress particle re-aggregation.
  2. Wet ultrafine grinding: Use horizontal agitator bead mill with tiny yttria-stabilized zirconia beads (0.05–0.2 mm). High shear breaks NCM crystals down to 50–100 nm. Maintain low slurry temperature (<15°C) with cooling jacket to prevent crystal lattice damage and cation mixing.
  3. Post treatment: Spray drying to recover nano powder from slurry. Apply low-temperature calcination to repair surface lattice defects and remove residual dispersant.
  4. Inert packaging: Nano powder has huge specific surface area, so collect and store under low-dew-point nitrogen to avoid moisture and oxygen attack.

Limitations: Wet route introduces solvent recovery steps; surface residual lithium will rise. Long milling time may create crystal defects, which harms cycling performance of high-nickel NCM.

2. Bottom-up chemical synthesis route (for lab customized nano NCM)

Bottom-up methods grow nano NCM crystals from ionic precursors, delivering controllable nano primary particles without mechanical fracture.

  • Co-precipitation + low-temperature calcination: Synthesize nano hydroxide precursor, mix with lithium source, then calcine at relatively lower temperature to avoid excessive grain growth.
  • Solvothermal / hydrothermal synthesis: Precisely control temperature, pressure and pH inside autoclave to directly form nano-sized NCM crystals.
  • Flame spray pyrolysis: Atomize mixed metal salt solution into flame, one-step form nano NCM particles, followed by post calcination to complete layered crystal formation.

Advantage: Uniform nano primary particle size, controllable morphology. Disadvantage: High cost, low throughput, complex impurity control, mostly limited to R&D.

3. Why dry jet milling cannot produce true nano NCM

Fluidized bed spiral jet mill can reach D50 of 0.4–0.9 μm (submicron), but not discrete nano particles (<100 nm). When particles enter nano scale, van der Waals attraction dominates. Immediately after fracture, fine particles re-combine into soft agglomerates. Even if laser PSD shows nano readings, these are only agglomerated clusters, not separated nano single particles. Higher jet pressure or classifier speed cannot overcome this physical re-agglomeration limit.

4. Critical quality control challenges for nano NCM

  1. Re-agglomeration control: Nano NCM tends to cluster heavily; dispersant selection and surface modification are essential during wet milling.
  2. Crystal structure protection: High energy milling easily triggers lattice distortion, cation mixing and oxygen release for high-nickel NCM.
  3. Impurity control: Zirconia bead wear may introduce Zr contamination; full ceramic equipment lining reduces foreign impurities.
  4. Atmosphere and moisture: Nano powder adsorbs moisture and oxygen extremely fast. The whole recovery, drying and packaging must run under inert low-dew-point environment.
  5. Electrochemical trade-off: Nano NCM has very high specific surface area, leading to severe electrolyte side reactions, high residual lithium, poor flowability and low tap density. Nano NCM is mainly applied for high-rate electrode coating modification or research cells, not standard mass-production power battery cathode material.

To produce true nano-NCM powder (<100 nm primary particles), wet bead milling is the main top-down industrial pilot method, while solvothermal, co-precipitation or flame spray pyrolysis are bottom-up lab synthesis routes. Dry jet milling can only reach submicron NCM and cannot produce discrete nano particles due to strong inter-particle re-agglomeration. Nano NCM faces strict handling limits and electrochemical compromises, so its commercial mass application remains limited.
