Can Air Classifier Mill (ACM) Produce Narrow PSD for NCM

ACM can achieve moderately‑narrow PSD, but it cannot deliver the high‑quality narrow PSD required for EV‑grade NCM (especially high‑nickel NCM811). It has inherent limitations versus fluidized‑bed jet mill + independent turbo classifier closed‑loop system.

Working principle of ACM (Air Classifier Mill)

ACM integrates high‑speed impact grinding rotor + built‑in turbine classifier in one housing.
Material is shattered by hammer/pin impact; fine particles are carried by air to classifier wheel. Oversized material falls back into impact zone for repeated hammer striking.

Advantages of ACM for NCM

  1. Compact one‑unit design, simple process flow, lower capital cost.
  2. Good at breaking soft agglomerates. Can get reasonable D50 adjustment.
  3. Acceptable for low‑end NCM grades with loose PSD requirements, where strict D99 and span are not critical.

Critical limitations for high‑nickel EV‑grade NCM

  1. High‑energy mechanical impact easily fractures intact NCM secondary spheres
The pin/hammer impact creates lots of sub‑micron ultra‑fine debris. D10 drops sharply, span becomes larger. High‑nickel NCM with more fines shows higher residual lithium, moisture absorption and side reactions.
  2. Poor handling of hard sinter‑bonded agglomerates
Hard sinter necks from calcination need particle‑to‑particle collision (jet mill mechanism). ACM relies on hammer impact: either hard agglomerates survive and keep Dmax high, or you raise rotor speed, which smashes good secondary spheres into fines. There is no comfortable operating window for NCM811.
  3. Single integrated classifier has limited separation performance
The built‑in classifier shares the same air flow with grinding chamber. Cross‑contamination between coarse and fine fractions is unavoidable. It cannot independently set separate cut‑points for coarse tail and fine tail like two‑stage external turbo classifiers.
Span obtained by ACM for NCM is typically ≥1.5‑1.8, while EV‑grade target span is 1.1‑1.4.
  4. Contamination risk
Direct metal rotor‑to‑particle contact introduces metal wear impurities, which is unfavorable for lithium‑ion battery safety.

Practical comparison

Setup NCM PSD performance Suitable for NCM
ACM mill (stand‑alone) Moderate PSD, broad span, risk of excessive fines Lab / low‑grade non‑power NCM, not for NCM811 EV
Fluidized‑bed jet mill + independent multi‑stage turbo air classifier closed‑loop Narrow span 1.1‑1.4, well‑controlled D99/Dmax, minimal secondary‑sphere breakage EV‑grade NCM523 / NCM622 / NCM811 (industry standard)

Special case: Can we improve ACM PSD for NCM?

  • Operate at lower rotor speed, reduce feed rate, optimize classifier wheel speed.
  • Even with best tuning, ACM still struggles to reach EV‑grade narrow PSD. It can trim coarse tail partially, but cannot eliminate fine tail generated by impact smashing.

Key conclusions

  1. ACM is not the preferred production equipment for narrow‑PSD high‑nickel NCM cathode. Its impact grinding mechanism intrinsically generates fine debris.
  2. ACM may produce acceptable PSD for some non‑power low‑requirement NCM, but cannot meet strict D99, span and SSA specification for automotive batteries.
  3. For narrow PSD NCM: fluidized‑bed opposed‑jet mill for mild de‑agglomeration + separate multi‑stage closed‑loop turbo air classifier remains the industrial benchmark.
