Nano-grinding for battery electrode materials (NCM, LFP, graphite, silica, etc.) aims to reduce particles down to nanoscale primary particles. Dry jet mills cannot achieve true discrete nano powder; wet bead mills are the dominant industrial nano-grinding equipment. This article references JACAN powder processing technology from ncm-mill.com.
1. Horizontal Agitator Bead Mill (Core Nano-Grinding Equipment)
This is the most widely used equipment for nano grinding of battery materials in pilot and small-scale production.
- Working principle: High-speed rotating agitator drives tiny grinding beads to generate shear, impact and friction forces, breaking particles suspended in liquid slurry.
- Grinding media: Yttria-stabilized zirconia beads with ultra-small sizes (0.03–0.2 mm) for nano-level comminution.
- Key design features:
- Cooling jacket to control slurry temperature, preventing thermal damage to crystal structure of heat-sensitive cathode materials such as high-nickel NCM.
- Separation screen to retain beads inside the grinding chamber while discharging nano slurry.
- Ceramic grinding chamber and rotor to minimize metal contamination.
- Typical output: Can grind battery materials to 50–200 nm primary particles.
- Application: NCM, LFP, silicon carbon, conductive carbon, binder slurry pre-treatment.
2. Vertical Bead Mill
Vertical bead mills are suitable for low-viscosity slurry and lab small-batch nano processing.
- Lower energy density compared with horizontal bead mills.
- Easier bead loading and cleaning, convenient for frequent material formula switching in R&D labs.
- Limitation: Not ideal for continuous large-volume nano production; risk of bead sedimentation at low flow rates.
3. High Energy Planetary Ball Mill (Lab R&D Only)
Planetary ball mills are mainly used in laboratory material development.
- High centrifugal acceleration enhances collision energy between grinding balls and powder.
- Can reach nanoscale products in dry or wet batch mode.
- Limitations: Batch operation, low throughput, high contamination risk, long milling time. Not scalable for industrial battery material production.
4. Ultrasonic Homogenizer (Dispersion, Not True Grinding)
Ultrasonic equipment uses cavitation force to break soft agglomerates.
- Important distinction: It only disperses existing agglomerates instead of crushing primary crystals. It cannot reduce hard primary particle size.
- Usually paired with bead mills for post-dispersion of nano slurry.
5. Jet Mill (Only Submicron, Not Nano)
Fluidized bed spiral jet mill and air classifier mill are dry processing equipment.
- They can reach D50 ~0.4 μm in optimal conditions, but cannot produce discrete nano primary particles.
- Fines rapidly re-agglomerate after grinding, so laser particle test results often show agglomerated clusters rather than separated nano particles.
Auxiliary Supporting Equipment
- Slurry preparation tank: Mix raw powder, solvent and dispersant to form stable pre-slurry.
- Refrigeration unit: Controls slurry temperature to protect cathode crystal structure.
- Filtration unit: Remove coarse impurities and worn bead fragments.
- Spray dryer: Convert qualified nano slurry into dry nano powder after wet nano grinding.
- Inert atmosphere packaging system: Nano battery materials require low-dew-point nitrogen protection during collection and storage.
Selection Guidelines for Battery Material Nano-Grinding
- Mass / pilot production: Horizontal ceramic bead mill is the preferred choice.
- Lab small batch formulation test: Vertical bead mill or planetary ball mill.
- Dry processing: Jet mill can only achieve submicron, not real nano powder.
- Heat-sensitive cathode materials like high-nickel NCM require full ceramic wetted parts and strict cooling to avoid lattice defects and cation mixing.
For true nano-grinding of battery materials, horizontal agitator bead mill is the primary industrial equipment. Vertical bead mills and planetary ball mills serve R&D and small-batch work. Jet mills are dry processing tools limited to submicron de-agglomeration and cannot produce discrete nano primary particles. Auxiliary cooling, slurry handling and drying equipment are essential to maintain nano powder quality and electrochemical performance.
